Behavioral education and counseling services | Community Services and Outreach | Psychology

Behavioral Education and Counseling Services (BECS) at UNR was founded by Dr. Larry Williams and is currently directed by Dr. Matthew Lewon. BECS has provided Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) supports and training to Washoe County School District (WCSD) students, teachers, and families since 2016. BECS is headquartered at WCSD’s Marvin Piccolo School, but provides ABA services in district schools. BECS provides direct, consultative, evidence-based ABA services to students with behavioral and emotional needs, their families, and the WCSD staff who support them. BECS also serves as a training site for graduate and undergraduate students in UNR’s Behavior Analysis program, which is part of the university’s psychology department. The relationship between BECS and WCSD is mutually beneficial as WCSD receives quality ABA services tailored to each student’s needs at a fraction of the standard cost, while UNR students receive BCBA/BCaBA training and supervision / RBT, funding and the opportunity to practice ABA in a stimulating and enriching school environment.

The BECS team is committed to ensuring that the needs of all stakeholders are taken into account by providing high quality behavioral analysis services. Our goal is to provide collaborative, ethical, evidence-based services that result in meaningful behavior change for students, parents, and WCSD team members.

service model

BECS operates primarily on a behavioral counseling model aimed at building the capacity of WCSD staff to provide behavioral supports to students in need. In this model, individualized behavioral assessments, goals, and intervention plans are developed in collaboration with members of the student team. The BECS team provides direct skill-based training to staff and/or parents in implementing relevant ABA techniques. BECS helps staff monitor student progress and adjust supports as needed. The goal of our focus on staff skills development is to maximize the impact of our services for students by providing team members with strategies to create positive learning environments that benefit all students.

BECS provides a range of ABA services for WCSD students and staff, including:

  • Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA)
  • Function-based interventions
  • Curriculum and academic skills assessments
  • Class management
  • Training of staff and parents
  • Remote behavioral support
  • BCBA, BCaBA and RBT monitoring

Training and supervision of students

BECS serves as a training site for UNR graduate and undergraduate students in behavior analysis. Students working with BECS are certified and receive training and ongoing supervision according to the guidelines of the State of Nevada and the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Internship and stipend opportunities are available for graduate students, and undergraduate students can participate in BECS for college credit by enrolling in PSY 440
